Knowing where the main shutoff is can make a stressful plumbing event easier to manage. Locations vary by home and age.
Start where services enter
Look near the point where the water service enters the basement, utility room, crawlspace, or mechanical area. In some homes it may be close to the water meter or pressure equipment.
Label it without forcing it
Once identified, make sure the handle is visible and label it for other household members. Test only if it moves normally and you can safely observe the result. A stuck or corroded valve should be assessed rather than forced.
Add local shutoffs to your notes
Fixture shutoffs under sinks, behind toilets, and near appliances can sometimes isolate a smaller issue. Keep a flashlight nearby and make sure access is not blocked by storage.
