Winnipeg’s cold-weather swings make seasonal preparation useful, especially for exposed lines, outdoor taps, and basement systems.
Before freezing weather
Disconnect garden hoses, close and drain outdoor taps where the system allows, and check for drafts around areas where pipes pass through exterior walls. Do not use an open flame or improvised heat source on a frozen line.
Keep service areas accessible
Make sure the main shutoff, water heater, sump pit, and exposed piping are not blocked by storage. Check that a sump discharge route is visible and not obviously obstructed.
If a line freezes
If you can safely identify a frozen section, turn off the water and contact a qualified professional. If a pipe has burst, leave the water off and protect the area from further damage.
