A leak can feel urgent, but a short sequence of safe actions can help limit damage while you arrange help.
1. Make the area safe
Keep people away from standing water near electrical equipment. Do not reach into water if you are unsure whether electricity is present. Contact emergency services or the appropriate utility when the situation involves an immediate safety risk.
2. Control the water if you can
If the fixture shutoff is clearly accessible and turns without force, close it. If the leak is not controlled locally, the main shutoff may be the next option. Do not force a stuck valve or dismantle a connection.
3. Protect what you can
Move belongings away from the area, use a container for a small controlled drip, and take a few photos for your records. Avoid opening walls or applying temporary repairs that could make assessment harder.
